Inevitably people ask "what is your favorite game of all time?" Yes, these kinds of questions are unfair, but in order to avoid persuing the issue further, I simply respond "Final Fantasy Tactics."
If your at all interested in turn based strategy games, pick this game up ASAP.
The game was made by the same team at Square as Vagrant Story and it shows in everything from the artistic style to the storyline. If you liked the "feel" of Vagrant Story, you'll like this too.
The story is confused but enjoyable. It is a mature tale involving power and class and church and state all stuggling amidst a time of social upheaval. If this sounds like your bag, sweet. If you'd rather collect Pokemon, thats cool too.
The Jobs system allows you to customize your army and get cool classes like Ninjas. The replay value is tremendous and the enemy AI is challenging.
The graphics are appropriate to the task at hand but they certainly are old fashioned. The artistic direction is great and it isn't as if you need to show anybody the awesome power of your PS1.
Possibly the best title to bear the name Final Fantasy, November 15, 2001

Final Fantasy Tactics was released early on in the PlayStation's lifespan. While some dismissed it as too hard or too quirky, a lot of gamers found it challenging and a fresh change from more conventional RPGs.
It borrowed a lot, including its basic battle system, from Tactics Ogre (many of the staff also worked on that game). Its story, however, is radically different from TO, though equally interesting. FFT's tale of political upheaval and ancient magic suffers from a poor translation, but the craftsmanship of the plot manages to shine through.
FFT's graphics and music are surprisingly good for its age. Beautiful hand-drawn sprites are layered over 3-D battle maps, and the synthesized music only occasionally sounds like it.
The gameplay is incredibly deep, with dozens of different Job Classes and hundreds of abilities to learn. You can combine abilities to create new classes - a Knight who can use Black Magic, for example, or an Archer who can Steal. The possibilities are seemingly endless.
Now that Final Fantasy Tactics is available again as part of the Greatest Hits lineup, it's a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in the most polished strategy/RPG around.

...This game is fantastic. The story blends perfectly with the battles, and many times takes place in battles. I most of all really like the level-up system, it's very complex and uses the Job System. This is no doubt a very intellectual game. The job system allows for hours and hours of battling and leveling up until you reach your max statistics, and even then there is still work allowed to be done. The storyline is very, very deep. Another aspect is the Music, which is amazing! it adds to the atmosphericness of the game, and is very well written. I recommend this to anyone with a whole lot of patience...and a brain. If you are restless...this isn't for you. This game would probably appeal to the more mature croud of gamers...hence the long battles and complex/intertwining storyline.

I was a little leery at first about buying this game, it didn't look much like the "regular" Final Fantasy series' games I've come to enjoy so much, but this game is great!! While it retains the title "Final Fantasy" it's a very different game unto itself. If anything, I find it more comparable to "Shining Force"-- a Sega Gensesis game from the good ol' days of 16 bit platforms. As it implies, FF Tactics (tactics being the keyword there) is a game that relies more on strategical movement and combat and offers endless options in developing your own squad of characters-- create a team full of wizards and magic-users; or a team dependant more on physical attacks with knights and archers; and even masters of the martial arts with ninjas and monks-- the combinations are entirely up to the player and one can easily change them at will. Stuck with a low-level healer that's basically no-good in combat? Change their job and they soon become anything else your heart desires, the options are endless.
Anyone looking for an RPG that's a little bit different, something other than the norm, and requires a little more brainwork similar to that of chess or, as before mentioned, "Shining Force", should pick this one up. This is definitely a game that will keep you glued to the screen for a while!
