Gunship 2000, February 22, 2000 |
Reviewer: A gamer from San Francisco
Back in '89 I spent the better part of my summer vacation playing Microprose's original Gunship. Gunship 2000 is definately an improvement upon the original (remember CGA graphics?). GS2K for the Playstation has a new arcade mode not originally included in the PC release, but don't bother; the career/campaign mode is much more fun. The game offers campaigns in the Middle East (interestingly, Microprose wrote the software BEFORE the Gulf War broke out), and Western Europe. Sorry GS fans, there's no South East Asia campaign in this version. The Army battalion insignias, rank structure, and medals/decorations are authentic, and the gamer can choose between seven actual assault helicopters and an arsenal of armaments. Unfortunately, GS2K forces the player to retire his pilot after 50 missions, or
at the rank of Brigadier General, whichever comes first. A great bonus is the new feature allowing the gamer to lead an entire flight (five choppers total) into battle at once. These other four pilots become a permanent part of the group (unless they fall in combat), and their recommended promotions and decorations can be approved, declined, or assigned to another aviator by the gamer. Although an outstanding flight simulator and top seller in it's time, GS2K is badly dated. Younger gamers not familiar with the old PC versions will be sorely disappointed by the game's poor visual presentation, and choppy, awkward gameplay. However, for diehard fans this is a must have. Enjoy! |
